Teach Through Educational Travel: Volcano Poas, Costa Rica

By Jessie V

Poas Volcano, Costa Rica

Have you ever seen a live volcano? Head to Costa Rica! The Volcan Poas (Poas Volcano) is located in Poas Volcano National Park. In this photo, you can see one of the two crater lakes that Volcan Poas boasts. This lake is called Laguna Caliente (hot lagoon!), and is one of the world’s most acidic lakes. Don’t swim here – even fish and seaweed avoid this place. Standing at the rim, you can smell the sulfur! It has been erupting for over 11 million years, although it hasn’t had much activity in the last few hundred.

Download a larger image and share the photo with your class, then try these discussion questions and classroom activities:

  • Volcan Poas is a type of volcano called a stratovolcano. Explore the the composition of a stratovolcano. Think about how high this volcano is located – and why it is covered with clouds much of the time. View the satellite map – and peek through the clouds to see the volcano.
  • Take a trip to the Volcan Poas via this video. Read along with one travel writer’s trip there. What surprises you most about this area?
  • The Poas Volcano National Park shares a glimpse of Costa Rica’s wide biodiversity. There are four different habitats represented in this park, and countless animals and insects. Read more about the park, and think about the importance of preserving these natural spaces.
